How to choose proper tennis shoes?

The range of sports shoes is so wide that sometimes it is impossible to choose the right one on the first try. This also applies to tennis shoes, which depending on the different types, meet the different needs of tennis players at each level. The starting point for choosing tennis shoes are our expectations, but one step at a time...

Tennis shoes an essential element of a tennis player's equipment

Choosing tennis shoes is not as obvious as it may seem. This is especially due to the diverse requirements that both beginners and advanced players have. Tennis is a discipline in which it is easy to get an injury, so it is worth taking care of proper comfort and protection of the feet. Tennis shoes are one of the two key elements of the sport next to the racket.

Tennis is a dynamic game, based on movement and constant direction changes. When choosing tennis shoes, one question arises among amateurs: whether it is worth investing in professional shoes or if it is better to use traditional sports shoes. We should remember that not all feet are the same, not everyone plays tennis the same way, not everyone plays on the same surface. The ability to choose shoes is to balance the characteristics that each of us values personally. So, it's worth knowing the anatomy of the tennis shoe and the types of soles. With this knowledge, you will make the correct choice.

Types of soles in tennis shoes

The type of surface on which you will play will most often determine the type of your future tennis shoes. There are four types of shoes: for hard courts, clay courts , grass courts and carpet courts.

Tennis shoes for hard courts – shoes for this surface are designed with focus on durability, as hard soles are more helpful. They are characterized by stiff upper and sole, which are resistant to frequent stop-and-go movement. There is a large number of shock absorbers inside, which help to absorb impact on hard courts, as well as elastic channels which support natural movement. The universal sole is a big plus of boots for hard courts, as well as fact that you can use them on the grass and brick dust courts. Tennis shoes with universal soles have different markings. For example, Nike uses “HC” abbreviation, but it’s not standard. For ease of use, in our shop you will find a filter with which you can choose the correct type of sole: Tennis shoes with all-court sole.

Tennis shoes for clay courts - clay courts tennis shoes have a characteristic tread, which provides good traction. The tread design ensures that it doesn’t collect as much clay, and it is easy to clean. Clay court shoes have a tightly fitting upper part and reinforced sides. This ensures better foot stability, especially during slides. Tennis shoes for clay courts is marked with “clay” marking. Here you will find the whole range of tennis shoes for clay courts: Tennis shoes for clay courts.

Clay court sole

Tennis shoes for grass courts – their sole is a small rubber plug 3mm high. Such a sole provides proper grip while not severely damaging the court. Shoes with such soles are worn by players at Wimbledon. Shoes for natural grass are hardly available in Poland. We offer several models of grass court shoes.

Grass court sole

Tennis shoes for carpet courts - shoes for carpet courts have a completely flat sole to ensure a slight slip on this surface. They are made of non-marking rubber and are much more flexible. Due to the small number of carpet courts in our country, the range of these shoes is limited. Check: Tennis shoes for carpet courts.

How do you fit tennis shoes to the foot?

The perfect fit of tennis shoe is the final step before making the purchase. Tennis shoes cannot be too tight or too loose, but rather with a bit of space in fingers (up to 0.5 cm), comfortable instep and stiff heel, on which your foot won’t slip. When trying the shoes on it is important to don’t feel any pain, discomfort or scrapes, as these problems will increase during the game. Tennis shoe must fit your foot width and provide proper shock absorption. It is worth to wear sport socks during the measurement, because they are thicker than the normal ones. You should try some dynamic moves to test the shoe during movement. Checking few similar sizes will allow to make more accurate choice. For greater comfort of better fit it is worth using special orthosis or inserts.
